“EC officials in bed with NPP to rig 2020 elections in Karaga and Nanton” – NDC

The Northern Regional Secretariat of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is accusing the Electoral Commission and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region of attempts to rig the 2020 elections in the Karaga and Nanton constituency of the Northern Region.

The party also says the EC is being influenced by some big wigs of the NPP at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to illegally transfer some voters from the Tamale Central and South constituencies to Karaga and Nanton respectively.

Addressing the press at a briefing Tuesday, 2nd October, 2019, Deputy Communications Officer, Hardi Pagazaa noted the ploy by the EC and NPP is to influence the outcome of the 2020 elections.

Indeed our intelligence has it that a meeting to that effect was held at the offices of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council earlier in the week where some Electoral Officers in the region were to be tasked to commence the illegal transfers in a mass manner so as to help the NPP parliamentary candidates in Karaga and Nanton to win their seats in the 2020 elections.

We, of the National Democratic Congress wish to alert the E.C. that its elaborate plan to help the NPP win some parliamentary seats in the region is being monitored and will be resisted at all levels within the confines of the laws of this country.

In the meantime, we wish to call on the NPP and the E.C. in the region to discontinue the plan to embark on the illegal voter transfers.

According Mr. Pagazaa, the NDC is monitoring the elaborate plans by the EC to help the NPP win some seats in the region and will protest against it within the confines of the law.

He therefore called on officials of the EC to disband the said plans and called on stakeholders to advice the commission not to engage in conducts that will compromise the peaceful conduct of the 2020 elections.

These two constituencies are not dumping grounds for those desperate for parliamentary seats. We do not want the 2004 Jakpahi incident in the Tolon district to recur and the only way to avert that is for the E.C. and the NPP to discontinue this rather wicked and shameful rigging plan.
