President Nana of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo has described as a great loss to the Nation following the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
The President said Ghana is poorer for the loss of the late Statesman who is the founder of the Fourth Republic and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd) passed on Thursday morning 12th November at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
Announcing the tragic news in a statement, President Akufo-Addo conveyed his heart condolences to the wife and family of President Rawlings on behalf of the people of Ghana.
“I convey the deep sympathies of Government and the people of Ghana to his wife, the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawilings, the children, and family of the late President, in these dificult times.” The stated read.
However, President Akufo-Addo has also declared a one-week national mourning starting Friday, 13th and 20 November, 2020.
He also announced the suspension of his campaign and that of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“I have directed that all national flags should fly at half-mast for the next seven (77) days in all parts of the country, and have declared seven days of national mourning from Friday, 13h November to Friday, 20th November. In honour of the memory af former President Rawlings, the Vice President and I have suspended our
campaigns for same period.”
It continued “Government will work closely ith the fanmily of President Rawlings on the
arrangements for a fitting State Funeral for the late President, and will keep the
nation informed accordingly.”
