After a complete rehabilitation and maintenance works on the Accra-Tema rail lines, train on the stretch is set to commence operations after a year of total shutdown in 2017.
The re-launch of railways activities kick started Tuesday morning, 29th January, 2019 with a trip from the Accra terminal at Kantamanto to Tema and back to Accra.
Senior government officials such as the sector minister, Hon Joe Garthey, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Accra Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah, Traditional rulers and the media where among dignitaries who present for the journey.
The Railway Development Authority is therefore effective today (Tuesday), offering free transport service for passengers on the Accra-Tema bound and after apart its resumption.
Some dignitaries and journalists who made the trip for the first time shared their feeling that it was a great experience and a convenient mode of transport.
Others who have experienced the journey before, both in home and abroad commended the Railway Ministry, the Ghana Railway Authority for ensuring the coaches are back in the tracks.
They however urged the ministry and relevant authorities in the sector to ensure good maintenance for the coaches as well as encroachment issues along the major rail lines.
Transport business in the railway sector was brought to a halt following an accident at Tesano in October 2017 causing injuries to inhabitants along the area.
A committee was setup by the Railway Ministry chairman Deputy Railways Minister, Agyeineng Boateng to investigate the cause of the accident.
The committee later issued a report after its investigations and recommended services on the lines should be suspended for a complete refurbishment of the rail line and maintenance work on the coaches.
