Ex-President of Eastern African nation, Tanzania, Benjamin William Mkapa, has died aged 81.
Incumbent President of Tanzania, John Magufuli, announced the death of Mkapa on Friday morning, July 24, 2020.
According to Magufuli, “Mzee Benjamin William Mkapa, the third president of Tanzania has died at a Dar es Salaam hospital where he was admitted,” calling on “all Tanzanians to receive the news of his death and to pray for Mzee Mkapa, more information will be released but Mzee Mkapa is no more.”
Mr Mkapa ruled Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 when he handed over power to Jakaya Kikwete.
Tributes have started pouring in for Mr. Mkapa.
President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta has already sent a message of condolence to Mr. Magufuli and the people of Tanzania.
Mr Kenyatta described the late President as “an outstanding East African who worked tirelessly for the integration, peace and progress of the region.”
