Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cut short his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region following the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr Rawlings, 73, died in the early hours of Thursday, 12th November at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after battling ill-health over some few weeks.
A statement signed by Campaign Spokesperson James Agyenim-Boateng said “The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has suspended his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region with immediate effect, following news of the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
It added “Mr Rawlings was an iconic figure and founder of the NDC.”
President Jerry John Rawlings was the first President under the Fourth Republic between 1993 and 2001.
John Mahama served under his (Rawlings’) NDC adminstration as Deputy (and later) Communications Minister.
