The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Savannah Region have turned down an invitation from the Savannah Regional Minister, Salifu Adam Braimah to celebrate the party’s victory in the just ended December 2020 general elections.
The widely circulated event is scheduled to take place on Monday, 21st December, 2020 in Damongo, the regional capital to celebrate the party’s gains in the December polls.
The letter signed by the Minister also invited Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to a peace walk on Monday morning and a close door meeting to discuss internal party affairs.
But the party’s spokesperson in the region, Mohammed Issah revealed the decision to unanimously boycott the event was arrived at a Regional Executive Committee meeting held on Saturday, 19th December, 2020.
“At a meeting held today on the 19th of December, 2020, the Regional Executive body has unanimously taken a decision to stay away from the purported “celebration activity in Damango” that invited party executives and officials.”
According to him, the Minister acted in breach of the party’s constitution.
“The New Patriotic Party’s Constitution as amended is clear in Article 9 clause 14 as to who and how the Regional Executive Committee’ meeting and similar engagements are held,” he stated.
Mr Mohammed Issah further cautioned all government appointees, MPs elect, Council of Elders, regional and constituency executives, patrons and other party functionaries to abstain from the said event.
He further reiterated that the regional executive committee is the body stipulated by the party’s constitution to run its affairs and not a single individual.
However, Mr Issah assured party members that the executive committee will organise a big celebration for their success chalked.
“All are advised to stay calm as the Region prepares for a grand victory party as the regional party waits for the greenlight,” he concluded.
The New Patriotic Party in the Savannah region snatched three parliamentary seats from the NDC in the region including the Salaga North, Daboya Mankarigu and the Damongo constituencies.
Meanwhile, Mr Adam Braimah lost the Salaga South constituency seat to the NDC’s candidate, Hajia Zuweira Ibrahima.
