The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated the compilation of a new voters’ register is needless despite participating in the two-day pilot registeration exercise across the country.
The exercise which ends today is aimed to test the readiness of the registration kits and process ahead of the actual registeration starting late June.
The NDC in statement signed by the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, said its position has not changed following widespread reports the party has reversed its earlier stand against a new register.
According to him, the party took part in the exercise to monitor the process towards a possible limited registration exercise.
“We wish to state unequivocally, that our position against the compilation of a new voters’ register has not changed. We maintain that the existing voters’ register, which has successfully delivered five (5) national elections with legitimate outcomes is credible and fit for purpose.”The stated stated.
The NDC further stated that the EC is bent on compiling a new register in order to disenfranchise some eligible Ghanaian voters.
It also strongly maintains that, the insistence of the Jane Mensah led Electoral Commission to compile a new register is to rig the 2020 elections for President Akuffo-Addo.
“The agenda of the Jean Mensah-led Electoral commission to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, has the tendency to jeopardize the peace and democracy of this country. Hence, we shall continue to employ every legitimate means to stop this evil agenda as we have already intimated publicly.”The statement added.
