Piloting of new voters’ registration kick starts today

The Electoral Commission has begun a nationwide test of the upcoming voter registration exercise for the December 7, 2020 elections.

The two-day exercise which begins today (Tuesday), 2nd and Wednesday 3rd June, 2020.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services of the Electoral Commission in an interview with Joy News’ monitored by tamaleonline.net said the exercise will be carried out simultaneously in all 16 regions aimed to test the registration process and the machines.

According to him, an end-to-end test has been done and the Electoral Commission (EC) is satisfied with the results.

Dr. Quaicoe revealed that over six thousand machines have been procured (6,000) for the registration exercise.

He addeed registration materials have been dispatched to various regional centres.

Registration & Requirements

Amidst the controversy surrounding the compilation of a new voters’register, the EC maintains actually registeration will take place within 38days, starting late June and end late July, 2020.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe insist that the Ghana Card (issued by the NIA) and passport are to be used as registration documents.

He noted that, even though the exclusion of other form of identification (ie; birth certificate) have been excluded, eligible Ghanaians without both registeration documents can still register with guarantors.

However, Dr. Quaicoe cautioned against bearing of false witness by acquaintances, family relations and friends.

Covid-19 Protocols

Meanwhile, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe also stated that Veronica Buckets, Liquid Soaps, Hand Sanitizers amongst bothers have been provided at all registeration centres.

He added health professionals will be present at all registeration centres to attend to any cases in case the need arises.

Timelines & Programs

With barely six (6) months to the general elections, the EC is expected to conclude registeration for the new compilation of a new register late July.

Other programs before the December 7 elections include publishing of provisional voters’register in August.

In September, the EC among other things us expected to hold the voter exhibition exercise to ensure details of voters are properly capture in the register.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will also hold the Nomination process from October through to November before the general elections.
