Naa Alhaji Mahamudu Tahiru, a retired Colonel of the Ghana Army has been elected Council of State representative for the Northern Region.
The Zung-Lana pulled 23 votes out of 32 to beat Pishigu-Lana Alhassan Andani, former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak and Mohammed Abdul-Rashid.
Addressing the press after the declaration, Zung-Lana thanked delegates from the 16 assemblies in the region for a peaceful process.
He pledge to keep close relationship with his contenders towards contributing to nation building and the development of the Northern Region.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity given me today. Indeed, what has happened today is not a victory for me but for Dagbon,” Zung-Lana said.
The Council of State has a very significant role to play in the governance of the country, as it is enjoined by the 1992 Constitution (Chapter 9, Article 89) to “counsel the President in the performance of his functions”.
