The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Walewale in the North East Region has taking a swipe at the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for using the only public library in the West Mamprusi Municipality for political meetings.
The West Mamprusi Municipality Library is in a deplorable state with many of the books and amenities in tatters and patrons.
Lack of reading books and reference materials, broken shelves, chairs and tables, faded paintings and wiring with exposed cables, poor lighting system, with very old books, are what users of the facility are confronted with on daily basis.
Mr. Majeed Ali Wuni, the constituency communication officer of NDC in the Walewale constituency, in an interview, condemned a Pro-NPP group calling itself “NPP Concern Agent for Victory” in the Walewale constituency for rather turning the facility into their meeting grounds instead of pressuring the government to rehabilitate the facility with new stock of books.
According to him, since the establishment of the library in 2009/10 by Hon. Zak Sulley, a DCE in the Mills/Mahama regime, there has not been any major rehabilitation on it, and noted that, the facility, which falls under public domain, should not be left in such a bad shape.
Mr. Majeed Ali Wuni explained that, “government’s flagship free education program will be meaningless if students do not have a conducive environment to conduct research.”
He added the poor condition of the facility had affected patronage and school children and workers in the area have resorted to using mobile data which is expensive.
“I’m very disappointed in the leadership of this government that a whole Municipality library of the Vice President home town will be in this deplorable state ”he added.
Mr. Majeed Ali Wuni, appealed to the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to rehabilitate the library, and stock it with the relevant books that would help boost academic performance in the municipality.
The West Mamprusi Municipality performed worst in the North East region with East Mamprusi and Mamprugu Moaduri leading in the BECE exams.
