Wa Naa apologies to Bawumia after late Imam’s family rejected funeral donation

The Wala Traditional Council has rendered an unqualified apology to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia after the family of late Dr Sulemana Haroon Bukari, Upper West regional Chief Imam rejected a token of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢20,000) as “funeral donation”.

“Our attention has been drawn to a press release issued by the family of the late Imam af the Wa Central Mosque, Dr. Suleman Mahama Haroon Bakuri on 11 September, 2020 captioned as above,” a statement by the Wala Traditional Council said.

According to the statement signed by the Overload of the Way Traditional Area, Wa-Naa Fuseini Seidu Pulpuo IV, the reason for rejecting the well-intended gesture by Dr Bawumia is alien to the customs of the people of Wa.

It added the least the people of the Upper West region should do is to thank him [Dr Bawumia] for paying a visit to Wa Naa Palace during his tour of the region.

“We wish to state that the grounds on which the family under reference took the decision to reject your generous and well intended donation to the said funeral is alien to the customs and traditions of the Wala people and, therefore, most unfortunate. The least we should have been doing as a people was to thank you so much for your recent visits to the Wala Tradional Area in particular and the Upper West Region in general.”

the statement added.

It further stated “Your Excellency, we the traditional authorities would want to, on behalf of all the people in Wa and the Muslim Ummah in general render an unqualified apology for the unfortunate incident.”

Background

The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, 11th September, 2020 offered a GH¢20,000 donation to support the final funeral rites of the late Upper West regional Chief Imam, Dr Sulemana Haroon Bukari.

But the well-intentioned gesture was rejected by the family indicating the donation was belated and the Vice President failed to turned out for the funeral when he visited the region.

According to the family, the donation came through the Way Central NPP Chairman which they deem improper.
