Telecommunications giants MTN Ghana says subscribers will need to provide a valid identification card for Mobile Money transactions beginning 1st February, 2021.
The company says customers will need to provide the Drivers License, Ghana Card, voters ID card passport, NHIA card or traveling passport to either deposit or withdraw money from merchants.
This comes after the company launched the MoMo Pay, a merchant payment service in January 2017 to encourage the digitization of the economy in the open markets.
MTN Ghana explained that “when an agent is performing a cash-out for a subscriber, the agent is required to select the ID type and enter the ID number of the ID card the subscriber provides.”
According to IT expert Emmanuel Konam, this could serve as an avenue to curtail the growing cases of fraud in the system.
He explained that MoMo fraudsters will no longer have an opportunity to scam unsuspecting subscribers for monies in their safe.
He commended the MTN Ghana indicating that the new update even though will slow the pace of transaction will be a game charger.
